Klöckner & Co commits to ambitious climate targets

Klöckner & Co signed up to the “Business Ambition for 1.5°C” of the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi), a global emissions reduction framework, in 2020. “The SBTi has now recognised the medium-term CO₂ reduction targets defined by Klöckner & Co as scientifically sound,” the company announces.

With these targets, Klöckner & Co will reduce its Scope 1 and 2 CO₂ emissions – i .e. emissions associated with the company itself (e.g. from its vehicle fleet or purchased energy) – by 50% by 2030. In Scope 3, the company will also reduce emissions that can be directly influenced (e.g. through business travel) by 50 % by 2030. In Scope 3, the company will also reduce emissions that can be directly influenced (e. g. through business travel) by 50 % by 2030. Emissions that cannot be directly influenced (Scope 3, e. g. from purchased goods and services) will be reduced by 30 % by 2030. “These medium-term targets are based on the latest scientific findings and meet the requirements of the Paris Climate Agreement to limit global warming to a maximum of 1.5 ⁰C,” emphasises Klöckner & Co.

In the long term, Klöckner & Co plans to reduce emissions that can be directly influenced to net-zero by 2040 (Scope 1, Scope 2 and Scope 3 emissions that can be directly influenced). In Scope 1 and 2 alone, the company will save around 90,000 tonnes of CO₂ emissions every year. The emissions that can only be influenced indirectly—especially from purchased steel products—will be eliminated on a net basis by 2050.
