CO2-Neutral Pipe Manufacturing Initiative

Sustainability in manufacturing is becoming increasingly crucial for all industries. Poppe + Potthoff has long aimed to contribute to eco-friendly steel pipe production. That contribution is now becoming even greater: Wirtschaftsvereinigung Stahlrohre e.V. has received the go-ahead for the association’s “Carbon Reduced Tubes & Pipes – On the way to CO2-neutral steel tubes” initiative. As a member of the association, Poppe + Potthoff Präzisionsstahlrohre GmbH aims to achieve the legally required climate neutrality by 2045 at the latest. Strategies, concepts, and measures will be developed with other association members to initially reduce CO2 emissions in steel pipe production and produce CO2-neutral steel pipes in the future.

Through knowledge transfer, exchange of experience and joint action, the synergies arising in the initiative will be used to achieve climate neutrality as early as possible. The members have all made a voluntary commitment to the common goal of a CO2-neutral steel pipe. The progress of the individual companies on the way to climate neutrality will be monitored through annual status reports to create the greatest possible commitment.

In addition to Poppe + Potthoff Präzisionsstahlrohre, manufacturers of all major types of steel tubes are represented in the initiative. Seamless, cold and hot-finished steel tubes are represented, as are steel tubes welded from coil and cold-drawn precision steel tubes. In future, members will be identified with their own label, “Carbon Reduced Tubes & Pipes – On the way to CO2-neutral steel tubes”. The label will indicate that the respective company has committed itself to promoting the production of CO2-neutral steel tubes in its production.

Als erstes Projekt werden durch die Initiative momentan übergeordnete Product Carbon Footprints (Master-PCF) für die verschiedenen Produktionsverfahren erstellt. Hotspot analyses will be carried out using these master PCFs to localise the main CO2 emission areas and find potential for improvement. The initiative is supported technically by Green Navigation GmbH, a consulting and service company specialising in creating climate strategies and calculating carbon footprints.
